Team Selection
TEAM SELECTION COMMITTEE
A Team Selection Committee exists to prayerfully recommend community members for service on upcoming weekends. Chaired by an Emmaus Board member, this committee consists of the Community Spiritual Director, 4 members at-large, and the upcoming weekend Lay Directors and Spiritual Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS: Community members will become eligible to serve in the talk room as a team member by working in at least two off-site positions. A service card listing off-site service areas such as camp set-up, camp clean-up, kitchen, chapel, agape, candlelight set-up and clean-up, preparation committee, and prayer vigil must be signed by the board member in charge of the committee. Off-site workers must faithfully serve for several hours or a full day in the kitchen or other service area in order to receive the approval of the committee chairperson.
When the service card has two signatures, the committee chairperson will submit the signed service card to the team selection committee. The community member is then added to the list of persons eligible to serve as a talk room team member. Off-site service cards will be included in the Pilgrim 4th Day Packets. Committee chairpersons will also have copies of the cards available at each walk.
PROGRESSIVE SERVANTHOOD: After off-site service, laity members are recommended for an Assistant Table Leader position, then either another experience as Assistant Table Leader or Table Leader with a talk assigned, Table Leader with Talk, and then moving on to Music Director or Assistant Lay Director. For Clergy, they are first given a Visiting Assistant Spiritual Director role, then Assistant Director present all weekend, prior to being considered for a Weekend Lay Director. This way, the member "progresses" through the positions within the talk room to be best experienced to eventually be a Lay Director. Lay and Spiritual Directors are chosen by the Emmaus board, preferably a year in advance of the weekend. They are not chosen by this Team Selection Committee; members must have served as an Assistant Lay Director twice before being considered for Lay Directorship.
BLENDS: Three to four names are recommended for each talk room position, and each talk, with an eye on assuring a good blend of denominations (not all team members from the same church or denomination) and years of service (new to teaming, a few weekend
experiences, and veterans with many weekends of experience).
PLACEMENT: After prayerful consideration, the team as a whole recommends 3 to 4 persons for each team room position. The Lay Director may bring 2 or 3 names for consideration only. Also, any Community Member may make any Committee Member aware of their desire to team. That Committee Members will pray for confirmation and bring forth the name to the Committee if so led. After all recommendations are complete, the Lay and Weekend Spiritual Directors call community members in recommended order for consideration of serving.
